西千葉工作室は、ものづくりのための道具・スペース・アイデア・スキルをシェアするまちの工作室です。木工・洋裁・電子工作などの道具や、3Dプリンタやレーザー加工機などのデジタルファブリケーションなど、様々なものづくりの設備を備え、生活者が「つくる」「なおす」「つくりかえる」という行為を通じて暮らしや活動を自らの手でアップデートすることをサポートしています。
Nishi-Chiba Workshop is a community where tools, space, ideas, and skills for making things are shared. Tools are for woodworking, sewing, and electronics, as well as equipments for digital fabrication equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutting machines. Nishi-Chiba Workshop supports people to have their lives and activities “updated” with their own hands through “making,” “fixing,” and “re-making”.
ものづくりの民主化
ものづくりとは限られた人々にとっての特別な行為ではなく、生活者にとって、日々の暮らしを快適にしたり、日常をもっと楽しむための工夫のひとつです。また、商いや活動を支えてくれるものでもあります。ものづくりを気軽にできる環境が暮らしのすぐそばにあり、ものづくりが生活の一部となることで、消費的なライフスタイルから創造的なライフスタイルへと変化していきます。西千葉工作室では、3,500人を超える老若男女の生活者たちが、日々ものづくりのある暮らしを実践しています。
Democratization of “Monozukuri” (craftsmanship)
“Monozukuri” (craftsmanship) is not reserved for a limited number of people. It can be used to make one’s daily life more comfortable and enjoyable. It is also something that supports business and activities. An environment where people can easily engage in making things right in their daily lives. And with craftsmanship becoming a part of daily life, people will shift from a lifestyle of a consumer to a creativity-based lifestyle. At Nishi-Chiba Workshop, more than 3,500 people of all ages and genders are incorporating “making of things” to their lifestyles.

「壊れてしまったからなおそう」「今あるものを自分好みにつくりかえて、長く使おう」「不用品を有効活用してゴミを減らそう」。ものづくりという手段があることで、ものに新たな価値を与えたり、ものと長く付き合うライフスタイルを可能にします。気候変動や環境汚染といった様々な環境問題の解決に向けて、生活者にも早急に具体的なアクションが求められる現代において、西千葉工作室では、生活者がものづくりによって資源循環型の暮らしを実践することを提案しています。
Sustainable
“It’s broken but we can fix it.” “Let’s recycle what we already have to fit our taste instead of tossing them.” Or, “why not reduce waste by effectively using discarded items?” With these kind of mindsets, the means of “Monozukuri,” offer us a new value to things and enable people to associate with things around them for a longer period of time. In this day and age where practical actions are required of consumers to solve environmental issues like climate change and pollution, Nishi-Chiba Workshops suggests that each of us practices recycling through “Monozukuri.”
まちの人々が活躍する場
西千葉工作室には、大学生、主婦、本業を他にもつ社会人、フリーランスデザイナー、元エンジニアのシニアなど、20人以上のまちの人々がスタッフとして関わっています。スタッフが日替わりで店頭に立ち、様々なバックグランドとそれぞれの特技や興味を活かすことで、幅広い分野のものづくりのサポートが実現しています。また、異なる得意分野をもつスタッフや利用者同士が互いに刺激を受け、学び合い、関係性を築きながら、西千葉工作室の枠を超えて活躍の幅を広げることも増えています。運営者と利用者の境界線をあえて曖昧化することで、まちの人々の活躍の場を生み出す仕組みづくりの実験に取り組んでいます。
A Place for Community Members to Play an Active Role
The Nishi-Chiba Workshop is staffed by more than 20 people from the community, including university students, housewives, professionals with other main jobs, freelance designers, and retired engineers. The staff members stand at the store on a daily basis, and by utilizing their various backgrounds, skills, and interests, they provide support in a wide range of manufacturing fields. In addition, staff and users with different areas of expertise are influencing and learning from one another, building relationships, and expanding their activities beyond the boundaries of Nishi-Chiba Workshop. By consciously making the boundaries between operators and users ambiguous, we are experimenting to create a system that offers opportunities to each person in the community to play an active role.
